Surface Tension revels in a sense of slowness, reduction and tranquillity. Centering on organic forms, and presenting them sparingly and in isolation the series explores my continued fascination with the human condition with particular focus on mindfulness and the mental clarity that comes from observing nature. The abstracted organic forms are familiar and hence comforting to the viewer however the ambiguous nature of both the origins of each object as well as the process (photographic or painted) call the viewer to engage with the artwork in an effort to resolve what it is and how it was created. The muted colour palette in combination with the blurred edges aim to quiet the viewers mind. Studies have shown that when the mind is at peace both our intelligence and ability to be compassionate to those around us is greatly enhanced. As our population expands and the bustle of modern life grows increasingly demanding, a quietening of our congested minds will help us to enhance our focus, creativity and compassion as well as our ability to deal with change and pressure. "To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.” Lao Tzu Christopher is a photographic artist and teaches “The art of meditative photography” at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens.
