This church was built between 1796 and 1797 according to plans by the architect Carl Gotthard Langhans, who also built the Brandenburg Gate. It was expanded in 1872 and got a tower extension, which cannot be climbed today because the stairs end in nothing. After the Second World War this church was probably no longer used and was left to its own devices. The windows were bricked up and if you are lucky, the sun rays shine through the holes between the stones and in the roof. But something is happening, the restoration has started and this place will soon no longer be an abandoned one. When I, Michael Schwan, travel in nature or visit Lost Places, I am always a deep connectedness. Be it majestic peaks, the most beautiful landscapes in Europe or the silence and tranquility of abandoned places, I am always astonished by these beauties The beauty of decay The theme Lost Places captivates him since more than 8 years. The impressive effect, the images of large, heavy industrial installations on the slides of the lectures challenged the young artist to go on a voyage of discovery in order to gain deeper insights into these unique places. This is how his series, the beauty of decay, came into existence. Today we find in his photographs other neglected places that play with the beautiful charm of lackluster decay. On the one hand, his photography preserves deserted villas, forgotten castles, old cinemas and cultural houses. On the other hand, it is artistic documentation of how nature recaptures what once belonged to it.
