Utilising Christian iconography in colour and form, this work references the pieta. The grief experienced through the loss of a child is felt in the body. The body turns inward on itself. The colours are vibrant however and the folds and structure of the fabric reference rebirth springing outwards from the sight of the pain. To make this work I took a carefully constructed and composed studio photograph which I then manipulated in order to remove background and context. This serves to heighten the ambiguity of the image and to allow the viewer to bring their own narrative to the work. The print is an archival giclee print. It is unfranked but can be framed upon request. The work can also be offered in other sizes upon discussion.

Nikki Willson works as a new media artist, video installation artist and photographer exploring issues of figuration, identity and otherness. Nikki has exhibited in a range of local and international art events and solo and group shows and her work has been acquired by private collectors and commissions. “Our lives exist within a world of constant movement and distraction. We are in constant negotiation between the space that we occupy and our own internal dialogue. There are moments however when everything becomes still and quiet. It is this sense of being outside of time that I am trying to capture in my work. I am also interested in mental health and neurodiversity, exploring issues of memory and identity. By manipulating the digital image I combine photography and painting to remove context and create narrative ambiguity. This ambiguity requires the viewer to fill the narrative space surrounding the work.
