About The Artwork

The Nature of Light series is a recent chapter in my perennial quest to capture nature’s fleeting beauty. It’s a quest found in Persian mysticism and what the Japanese call the concept of “mono no aware”: heightened empathy and appreciation towards transience of one's environment. The work is not about immortalising or defying nature’s impermanence; instead, it delves into the process of slowing down a fleeting moment in time long enough to reveal and magnify it, to invite others to observe, behold and cherish it. The framing vision for the series was to move away from the macro technique and totally still focus of my last photographic nature project and see how far I could stretch the medium through Intentional Cameral Movement (ICM) technique. Could I find the right interplay and alchemy between light, time, movement and space? Ultimately, I sought to convey the evanescent nature of light while aesthetically and visually bridging the gap between photography and my abstract painting practice. ICM allowed me to paint in pixels, using the camera as a paintbrush and the surrounding natural light as paint. Observation and practice taught me which time of day allowed access to different colour palettes, strong greens and white contrast midday, a broad range of warm shades around sunset and a mysterious blue at the tail end of dusk. The resulting imagery are open doors. On a conceptual level, they challenge the viewer’s sense of observation and invite them to question their sense of perception. What is tangible vs. perceived, manifest vs. ambiguous, veritable vs. distorted? These are quintessential questions we need to constantly be vigilant for in an age of alternative facts and deep fakes. On a more aesthetic level, they offer an interesting blurring of lines between digital pixels and what may appear like painterly brushstrokes capturing the evanescent beauty of natural light.
