For a girl who spent most of her life by the sea, the sea wasn't an important part of her life. But when you lose something, you know its value. In its absence, the sea became an omnipresent element in my life. After the six months I spent in Lille, I missed the sea. For me, the sea isn't just a place to swim and a blue color to look at. For me, the sea carries many meanings. For example, in Tunis, it signified luxury and social distinction: the bourgeoisie and the wealthy class of society lived by the sea and enjoyed its blue color every morning while sipping a cup of French coffee. The other social classes, on the other hand, had to travel between one and two hours to reach the sea. The bourgeoisie bathed in the private seas of hotels, restaurants and bars, while the other social classes bathed in the nearest sea they could reach. For the vast majority of unemployed young people, the sea is the border separating them from their dreams. Every day, they dream of crossing the sea to Europe. For some mothers, the sea represents the waves that have stolen their children. As for me, the sea was the only way to escape the misconceptions that had accumulated in all the alleys of society, and also to forget capitalism and its vestiges. But unfortunately, in Gabès, my hometown, it's a bit difficult to escape capitalism and its vestiges, because yes, we have factories with their feet in the water! So yes, the left half of the sea (where you can't see the factories) was for me the only way to escape the distorted ideas that have accumulated in all the aisles of society and also to forget capitalism and its vestiges. But despite them, despite their factories, their capitalist borders that divide the world in two, despite their bourgeoisies, their restaurants, this sea is mine and it will always be mine. One day, we'll have a drink on this sea to the health of all those middle classes who were confined to the bars of the city center, far from the sea. Cheers!
