About The Artwork

From the project "WHITE WALLS" This project focuses on the concept of “vacancy” as an increasingly rare subject to find in our chaotic contemporary cities. Something that still has the power to make us feel uncomfortable, with the urge to fill it with things, colors and “signs”. Indeed our minds are no longer accustomed to the absence of messages. And even the vacuum itself, like a black hole, yearns to be filled in by attracting everything in its range with some sort of magnetic energy. Here in Berlin I feel this kind of “vacancy” each time I find myself in one of its many “non-places”. Forgotten empty spaces overcome by dull blind buildings, whose white walls resemble giant sheets waiting to be filled in, to become part of the “whole”. Those surfaces seem to glow in the bright sunlight like enchanting alien monoliths, making us loose the sense of meanings. For this project I decided to make use of the analog pinhole photography on large format film. I did this for a series of reasons, the most important ones being the need to take my time with those places and the desire to make the emulsion itself “breathe” the atmosphere through the direct contact with the outside air. Moreover, the inherent softness and strong vignetting of the pinhole photography contribute to enhancing the glowing light I described above. TECHNIQUE: Photo taken on wide format 4'x5' b&w sheet film with a wide angle pinhole camera. Developed by me, then scanned and dust cleaned, sepia toned and printed. No manipulation is done, the image represents exactly what is on the negative. Ink pigment (giclée) print on archival acid-free 100% cotton baryta paper. 1cm white border around the image. An 30x40cm archival white passepartout is included (and easily removable). Dated, numbered, and signed on the back. Comes with a signed certificate of authenticity. EDITIONS: - 20x25cm (small size): edition of 10 - 32x40cm (medium size): edition of 3

I'm an Italian fine art photographer born in Syracuse (Sicily) in 1971. After receiving a Bachelor Degree in Computer Engineering I attended the Master class in professional photography at the Italian Institute of Photography (IIF) in Milan. My technical background provides me with a particular inclination towards deep conceptual analysis and strong formal balance, sometimes with a bit of an ironic drift typical of his Italian culture. My main work covers reportage, documentary and conceptual photography. My approach to story-telling maintains a distance from the subject. Through a formal composition, often accompanied by a frontal point of view, I try to counteracts the weirdness of the recorded situation. I'm not going to search empathy with the subject, my link is instead towards the scene as a whole, seen from the outside with a cold and mindful sight. Thus, in my vision people and objects assume the same value inside the image's boundaries. I use to call this "monumental reportage". On the other front, my recent conceptual research aims to overcome the classical key point of photography, which consists in capturing a single instant in space and time, sometimes culminating in the well known "decisive moment" of Henri Cartier-Bresson. In projects such as "Around" or "One, No One and One Hundred Thousand" I'm trying to condensate together different frames of the same subject. This creates a complex stratification of details and gives the viewer a richer and deeper dimension to explore while maintaining the power of visual synthesis that photography offers in respect to cinematography. My works are regularly shown in exhibitions and events in Germany and Italy. I live and work in Berlin.
