About The Artwork

I have a continuing series of two transmogrifying souls -- Willie and Lloyd. They touchdown here as a horse and a pony near Port Campbell, Australia. I was working on a movie filming the nearby Twelve Apostles rock formations, and this spot was a good place to land our helicopter. And a good spot to wait between camera reloads. I had some time to study the scene before me, and the horses were in the far distance. They meandered slowly closer, and I was able to grab a quick snap before the helicopter returned and they ran for the hills. Image size 12 3/8"x19" on 17x22" paper. Photo 1998, Printed 2018 Print #1 of an Edition of 25 + 2 A/P archival pigment print From a scanned B&W film negative, printed on Epson Legacy Platine paper, a surface that emulates a classic darkroom gelatin silver print. My Willie & Lloyd series regards a pair of transmogrifying souls who appear as horses, dogs, cats and plastic dinosaurs. The print is captioned on the front in archival ink. It is also possible (and fine with me) to window mat without the caption when framing. This photograph is not framed

I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
