Artist Recognition
Artist featured in a collection
This image is one in a series of self-portraits entitled, Self-Exposures. This series was selected as an Editor's Pick at Lens Culture in April, 2015. On August 10, 2015, an artist proof of Yellow Girl being exhibited in the juried exhibition the 37th Annual HJCC Committment to Excellence was awarded a Hawaii State Foundation Purchase Recognition Award and will be held in the permanent art collection of the State of Hawaii. With this series, I walk the line between reality and artifice. For me, a self-portrait is less a recreation of my reflection in a mirror than it is an active contract, like an actor under playing a role. I play myself. I play people I wish I could be. I play faults and frailties of humanity. I tell stories that are sometimes pretty, sometimes unsettling. Often these stories are cloaked under beauty, artifice I use to entice the viewer to view something at which they might not look otherwise look. These stories are as much social commentary as they are self-expression and introspection. The photograph is printed on Hahnemuhle 308 gsm Photo Rag paper, and mounted to a balsa wood panel cradled in a 1.5" deep pine support. The image is then hand coated with Encaustic Media. The natural wood siding required no framing.
