Old Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park At the time I was producing Zoo from 2007-2008, I was thinking about the work as a way of examining the desire to manipulate nature, to create an artificial reality, a simulation by giving environments more order than they normally would include. I was also interested in the physical space where the two--constructed and natural--began to break down. Reflecting back on the project now, 6 years later, I think a lot about the work in relationship to photography. In its historical relationship, modern zoos and the invention of photography were both introduced roughly the same time period, in the early to mid-1800. In their functional relationship, both seem to have the impulse to categorize and package the world. Lastly, with their relationship to representation, both have the ability to create a diorama. 24" x 30" | Edition of 10 | $700 40" x 50" | Edition of 5 | $1500 Limited edition archival inkjet prints are produced on an Epson Stylus Pro printer using the latest HDR archival inkjet technology. I am interested in the capacity of photography to re-imagine histories, subvert the sublime, and dissolve space and time. What is arresting to me about a photograph is its ability to depict surfaces and alter them simultaneously. These particular characteristics contained in the process of making photographic images are revealed, concealed and exploited in my work in order to address issues of temporality, site, landscape, veracity and the medium of photography itself. Not fixed to any particular theme and avoiding any model of what photographs should look like, each project contains its own strategy and application specific to the work.
