Born in Zimbabwe and now an Australian citizen, my formative years were tumultuous and marked by a clear separation from the background and values of my parents and siblings, all British born. From the colours and sounds of the powerful African soul from which I was born, to my boundless energy and creativity, to my pubescent independence and burgeoning same sex attraction, and an entirely progressive social and political outlook, it is only familial physical characteristics definitively connecting me to my otherwise entirely alien experience of family. Living independently from age 14, and enjoying diverse careers in the culinary arts, performing arts, commercial photography, community law-reform activism, HIV/AIDS education and policy, human rights and disability, my drive to flourish and succeed in the arts, has grounded me firmly in my current passion - fine art digital photography. Influences include Klimt, Kandinsky, Miro, DuChamp, Dali, Bretton, Warhol, Bacon, Whitely, Mapplethorpe and Ono, and my current work uses philosophical and practical frameworks drawn from the rigour of scientific investigation and discovery (convergent and divergent thinking, astrophysics, quantum mechanics, chaos theory, cybernetics, climate science, scientific photography), the appropriation of the "digital found object" ("mining corrupted data" for the beauty in the unseen, discarded, devalued, and dangerous), and the intuitive equivocal human capacity to relate to that without apparent meaning or value; finding subjective aesthetic relevance in the formless, the abstract, the distant, the disturbed. Visually my current work draws from a wide and vivid colour palette and focuses on convergent and divergent approaches to the reductive abstraction of the figurative, producing works of great diversity, intensity and serendipity that attempt to relate in very personal ways to the observer as interpreter.
