Each colour in this piece is painted onto acetate before being exposed and printed a separate layer onto the paper. This process blurs the line between painting and printmaking, and makes the edition totally unique and non repeatable. Thematically, the picture asks; How distinct and individual are we? The dominant impression is that we are one person, acting by and large independently. When I was working on this picture I was thinking about examples that are to the contrary, how we often think and act in alignment and indistinguishably from other people. Maybe you have had the experience where you think the exact same sequence of thoughts as people you are close to. Motherhood is one clear example where both before and for some time after birth, two people exist less distinguishably and in overlap. Contributing to this ‘dividualism’ is our surprisingly thin sense of self; Anil Seth talks about it in ‘Being You’, describing how his mother quickly loses any concept of who she is during delirium in hospital. Perhaps these figures are internal selves, who complete and conflict with each other. Maybe they are external humans who mimic, convince and persuade the other, each pulling in different directions.

Tom Berry (b. 1984, Bristol) is a British painter and printmaker currently residing in South East London. The London College of Communication (UAL) nurtured his artistic beginnings which developed from illustration towards the captivating mediums of printmaking and painting. Tom honed his technical skills as a screenprint technician at Sonsoles Studio Peckham (2018-2022). Immersed in this collaborative studio environment it enabled him refine his use of colour and experimental approaches to print. Galleries including The James Freeman Gallery (London) and Cube Arts (Dubai) have showcased his talent, and commissions from institutions like London's National Maritime Museum and Jewish Museum have further solidified his reputation. Tom's artistic approach blurs the lines between painting and printmaking, each technique enhancing the other. Both share a fascination with colour and the depiction of the human figure as rendered in the mind’s eye. In 2022, Tom's wife experienced a life-altering accident. His most recent exhibition, "One Step At A Time," is a collection of narrative paintings that serve as a response to this transformative experience.
