About The Artwork

This piece was inspired by Robert Rauschenberg's early lithograph pieces. Monochromatic yet incredibly lively was the criteria I imposed on myself while making this screenprinted piece on primed wood panel. The image uses snippets and fragments of culture layered until a full composition emerges. I aimed to take very concrete visuals from art history, magazines, video games, and even obscure t-shirts and replicating them until they create an abstract work. This method challenges the clearly defined intention of the original sample, scrambling a fully defined whole piece and reducing it to a mere part. It also brings to light a disrupted and fractured experience with media that has become a daily reality for most of us. Cultural artifacts of the present, past, and future, are now seamlessly blurred together into one playing field (think instagram) and this piece recreates that same phenomenon on a physical plane.

Alexander Key is an emerging contemporary artist from Charlotte, North Carolina. His work appropriates a wide variety of cultural ephemera, extracting familiar aesthetics and re-contextualizing them into new compositions that act as bittersweet commentaries. Mining from the resonance of childhood images and personal nostalgia, he explores the impact of these mental keepsakes on a broader collective memory. Working primarily in the medium of silkscreen printing, his work ranges from monotone prints to densely layered paintings. Please reach out if you are interested in showing his work or want to know more about his artistic practice.
