The United States’ “War on Terror” military campaign in the Middle East and its accompanying media spectacle provide the conceptual backdrop for the works featured in Suspensions. On a broad scale, the works themselves play with the accelerating global time-space compression that characterizes our times and the real and imagined mobility of our bodies, our identities, our belongings, our spaces. More specifically, the show explores the blatantly hypocritical dichotomy between supposedly laser-guided “smart-bombs” and the almost daily media reports on suicide car bombings in the Middle East. My works problematize the following big questions: what is behind and tacitly implied by the inclusion and repetition of certain news bytes and the ex/occlusion of others? How do targeted populations, in general and individuals, in particular coexist/cope with 21st century remote warfare and the centuries old cultural notions of resistance against foreign oppressors? How do my visual representations and concealments fit into the larger discourse of mechanically reproduced images, scientific and enlightened camera vision and perspective and the more generalized fetizisation of technological and social progress?

Recent works include experimentation with interactive robots (TRASHBOT), media and photographic installations on collateral damage in the War on Terror (Suspensions), and multimedia collage connecting ancient and modern time and space (The Great Ziggurat of Ur and Google’s Quest for the Book of Sand). He has also been published in Media Fields Journal (2014). Prior to that, Tauschinger-Dempsey completed an interdisciplinary MFA in sculpture and architecture at the Academy of Arts Düsseldorf, Germany and an MFA in Digital Media at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI.
