About The Artwork

"From Grey to Ochre" shows a color gradient from grey to ochre within five sheets. The gradient can be seen in every single picture and from picture to picture. The first picture starts with a shade of grey in the left which changes over to a shade of umber. This new color is carried over to the left hand side of the second picture and changes to a shade of light green, which is carried over to the third picture... . This simple display of color gradients, which I also resumed in my paintings of the "Gallery Series": http://michael-luther.net/en/work/overview/atmospheric-spaces/ was inspired by the interiors of Dutch Golden Age painting, and it is paying homage to such old masters as Pieter de Hooch or Jan Vermeer. The series "From Grey to Ochre" is an Iris print carried out using copperplates. As for each print of every single sheet the color gradient has to be applied anew to the printing plate, there is - in contrast to other more conventional etchings - no real (numeric) edition. There are eight unique copies (oil on laid paper) of this color gradient on five sheets .

"For all its diversity, the program of my painting is a very personal one. Whether it is the sensual materiality of color or a photorealistic representation of my studio, the themes feed from the artistic search for the possibilities of the medium of painting and the motifs come from my life and work environment. My work revolves around the process of painting itself, the materials, the techniques and the meditative time spent alone with the painting. I paint my work material or the exhibition spaces, I explore the various possibilities of overlaying paint, recycle paint residues or work playfully with the simplest painterly gesture, the brush stroke itself. Each work begins with the pictorial idea. It dictates the painterly form of expression and there is in this sense no external theme and no overriding idea that must be met. The image idea and the energetic effect of its execution are the subject.“
