What is Art for? Art has helped us to understand our human nature better, and bring our consciousness to higher levels. It has also been turned into a commodity to invest in, subject to market laws and speculation. A Calendar from a past year is worth nothing. How much is worth a calendar that is useless for more than 980 years before it turns useful? The purpose of this artwork in the form of a calendar is to question our relation to art and the interaction of art itself through time with social aspects, aiming to make us reflect over the essential human features. Every time a Year 3000 Calendar changes owner, an amount of money about 10% of the value of the calendar is suggested as a donation to an organization of her or his choice, focused on social or environmental help. The first donation of 10% is already included in the price paid by the first owner and is documented on the object itself by a copy of the receipt. Every time it is re sold or given as a present, the new owner will document this change. His or her name will be written down on a place reserved in the calendar, followed by the price paid and year bought as well as information about the donation, documented with a receipt if possible. This way each art piece will have detailed record of the previous owners and money donated. Each calendar will have its own story written down in itself, an artwork that promotes involvement on a social level. And so, the calendars with more owners and donations will have more History to tell in the future. The Year 3000 Calendar is in Latin, because it has been the most influential tongue in the western world, and it is a Gregorian calendar because it is the most used calendar nowadays. Will there still be wars on the year 3000? Will there still be art sold for millions? We don’t even know for sure if we, as human race, will still be here. But according to our time count we know the first of January will be a Wednesday.
