The work was inspired by a large piece of drift wood found on a beach in SC. Took it in the plane, then turned it on its side and hammered rows of tiny nails along its grain, a centimeter apart each time. Then held it upright, and coated the entire surface with a few layers of wax. The materials softened, and transformed the shape into a body like form. Hanging from a thin thread from the ceiling, the piece will move or turn slowly with the wind. It is reminiscent of a body, or organic form found in nature, or a giant chrysalis of a moth perhaps. Suspended in this way the piece speaks of the fragility, beauty but also shell-like body that is still an empty without the living butterfly, or soul that inhabits it. The Title, "Between Worlds" echoes the fact that we are human in body, but the soul cannot be captured or contained within it for eternity.
