Sculpture, Found Objects on Marble
Size: 10 W x 19.5 H x 3.5 D in
Ships in a Box
The work is polymerized gypsum applied to a wooden cradle to create gestural textures. These textured areas were then painted with artist's acrylic paints and partially covered in gold leaf. Pieces of green Verde di Prato serpentine marble and yellow Persian Azarshahr travertine marble were shaped, polished, cut and fitted into recesses cut in the cradle, while the cast and carved plaster hand with a verdigris patina and the found Alaskan river rock were fitted to the surface of the cradle. A clear cast-acrylic ring was fitted around the river rock. The metaphorical meaning of the piece is about trying to reach our hopes and dreams and how often our grasp falls short of our reach. Robert Browning wrote "... Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?" The work is fitted on the reverse with standard hanging wire, and the piece weighs 4½ lbs. (2 kg).
