Michael Binkley carved a trio of similarly shaped granite stones that were given to him by a collector. The granite was to be a new fireplace hearth for the patron’s home renovation, but it has broken.

“Gaudi’s Eye” is one of these granite pieces, sculpted in a symmetrical composition. The outside positive profile is echoed by a smaller, similar negative profile and again by a small hole through the granite that is filled with a translucent glass egg. The upper curves of the sculpture are parabolic arches that remind one of architect, Antoni Gaudi’s (1862-1926) unique style. When Michael and Michelle Binkley led an art tour on the Crystal Symphony in 2005, they were awed by Gaudi’s mastery, especially in the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. The glass egg is of course the eye.

Binkley carved the bottom of the sculpture as a curve and it stands on its black granite base by way of a hidden steel pin. This curve gives visual tension to the sculpture. Will it fall over? How does it stay up? The pin is free, so one can turn the sculpture to any preferred viewing angle.
