This abstract sculpture is carved from a piece of marble that my wife and I managed to wrestle into the car at an abandoned quarry in the Carrara area that was owned by the Henraux stone company. This has inspired the sculpture title. We were driving from Seravezza, Italy up into the Garfagnana area for a mountain hike with the dogs in Oct. 2018. We passed this abandoned quarry, right beside the road and stopped to explore for a few minutes. I just HAD to take a little souvenir!

Originally, I had envisioned a vertical, tornado-like form and began carving the sculpture that way back at the Seravezza studio. Michelle suggested it be turned to lay horizontally. I agree her idea was better. I like the negative space underneath and in the cup-like centre, and the pattern on the marble surface reminds me of the face of a full moon.
