A Koan is "a paradox to be meditated upon that is used to train Zen Buddhist monks to abandon ultimate dependence on reason and to force them into gaining sudden intuitive enlightenment."

In much of my work, I am exploring the paradoxes of natural and manmade construction and formal properties. I continue to reflect on seemingly separate and isolated systems that echo and relate to outside of themselves and cross pollinate; How the structure of a musical composition relates with practice of Buddhism as well as land formations and sacred geometry. Everything is interconnected.

Jillian Pate is steel sculptor exploring connectivity and synergy of all material things through abstraction. Influenced by music theory and patterns of order and disorder frequently observed in the natural and physical sciences, her work takes shape through the study of musical fugues and cannons as well as entropy, rhythm and recursion in nature; DNA, proteins and the genetic code.
