“If it is not done to my standard, you are disrespecting me. If you disrespect me, you disrespect this Prison”. Is what the inmates of the Youth Detention Centres were told, if their kit was not folded to the size of the prison handbook, un-creased and in pristine condition. For ‘disrespecting’ the Officer, one was hit around the head and had his entire kit thrown around his cell to start folding again. It could be said, the contempt felt towards such Officers and the system they stood for, fuelled the rebellious nature of some young inmates, making the dishonest path more desirable.
