About The Artwork

Born near Glasgow in 1964 and with a career spanning over thirty years Sonje is known for challenging the boundaries of her oeuvre and the materials used within, with inspiration absorbed by adventurous trajectories around the globe. The last decade has involved researching her varied northern family roots: firmly placed within emotive & creatively inspiring landscapes, in both the South Pennines, and more remotely Shetland, right up there in the wild North Atlantic Sea. The dramatic & turbulent North Sea, historic Yorkshire Hibbert family fish merchant connections to Shetland and her longstanding Shetland Tulloch family roots underpin the inspiration for the giant ceramic mussel shells which belong to a body of work called Seaweed In The Voe. Sonje lives and works from a small remote cabin in the north of mainland Shetland as part of the artistic & personal journey exploring who she is, where has she come from and where does she belong.

Born 1964 Glasgow. Educated Malawi and Hongkong. Owner of Werxzovart Studio based in Shetland UK. Visits to the studio welcome. See artist web page for more details. Sonje Hibbert is an artist whose genre is influenced by living & travelling extensively in this ever changing world. Through the maliable content of clay Sonje explores methods of depicting often unspoken concerns relating to the human condition. Along side the ceramic work runs a strong interest in drawing and painting. A long-standing engagement with the landscape has produced large paintings and collage which in turn is valuable source material for future sculptural work. More recent explorations delve into her ancestry of the windswept isles of Shetland archipalego where Sonje now resides. Added to this is a fascination of the geology that makes Shetland one of the oustanding geoparks on the planet. The work that ultmately gets produced forms the long standing exploratory narrative of who this artist is and where she comes from.
