About The Artwork

This Memory Tree is installed at Shooting Star House children’s hospice in Hampton. The tree was commissioned for the hospice’s memory garden, and will have stars added to it over the coming years which will be engraved with childrens' names who have been so sadly lost. Making the Memory Tree for Shooting Star House was both challenging and very rewarding. As an artist I always want my sculptures to mean something to people - but to create something like this, and know just how much it will mean to the families who use it to hold memories of their loved ones is a very special thing. I am very proud of the tree as a sculpture and thrilled to have been able to make it for the hospice. Silver Oak was hand-forged from steel, which was then galvanized and painted It has over a hundred acorns made from healing crystal spheres added to it’s branches. These allow parents to place their children’s stars next to crystals they feel represent their loved ones, or crystals with qualities that will help with their grieving. Although this was a one off commission and is already sold, I am happy to take commissions for similar tree sculptures.

Working predominantly in metals, I create an eclectic range of sculpture and contemporary furniture. Highly aesthetic in nature, you will find much of my work curvaceous and tactile, but with a coarseness that is lent from working with bare steel or stainless steel. My style ranges from figurative to abstract and is always in context with its environment. My current collection "˜Elements' focuses on Earth, Air, Water and Fire, and describes the reaction of when those elements meet. Developing the collection I concentrated on the proccess of using repetitive form of material - flat steel bar, to generate concepts and capture the movement of elemental reactions. The forms are designed appropriately for indoor display, but are perfectly suited to larger scale and outside installations for private or public spaces. http://www.philipmelling.co.uk http://www.artquid.com/artist/philipmelling/philip-melling.html htt
