I’ve long had a fascination with humpback whales. Their body is unusual in shape and are very sculptural. Peculiar characteristics of humpbacks include the rough, bumpy leading edges of their pectoral flippers, trailing edges of their tail flukes and a protrusion under their chins – all which I portray here.

I’ve carved this humpback in the attitude where the whale has taken a breath and is “humping” over to dive down into the depths of the ocean. I’ve mounted the sculpture on a glass base with a special edge to emulate water.

The medium of this artwork is picasso marble, which is quarried in the state of Utah, USA. This stone is characterized by a brown background with cross hatching of black striations, however this piece is mostly charcoal grey with a block of caramel on the left side of the body and the right tail fluke. I’ve orientated the sculpture within the stone to take advantage of a chocolate brown striation that surrounds the ribcage and passes down both flippers.

I’ve polished the marble to a smooth, high gloss finish to accentuate this colourful marble.
