Spruce Tree House was built by Ancient Native Americans called the Anasazi almost 1000 years ago in southwestern Colorado in a place called Mesa Verde. They were a people dependent on each other for survival in a challenging environment. How they used their resources and ingenuity inspired this sculpture.
After three years of research trips to photograph "Spruce Tree House" in the fall and the spring, I finally had enough visual reference material to begin the Mahogany sculpture that would define my 30 year career as a sculptor.
Starting with a 6" x 20 " 48" plank of Honduran Mahogany, I began carving the wood 1/8"inch at a time until 3 months later I had an image of this famous cultural landmark that was dramatic in its presentation no matter which direction the light came from. I produced a wildly successful limited edition of 126 cast paper sculptures that were coveted by collectors from Key West Florida to San Francisco. This is the piece that started it all !
This sculpture graced my fireplace mantle for twenty years until Parkinson's disease made it necessary for my wife and I to move from our mountain canyon hideaway in 2016. The only care it requires is an occasional dusting and a little furniture polish ( personally I like the extra realism a little coating of dust gives it!). It needs to go to a good home!
