This piece works on several levels. The canvas within is a super saturated and digitally manipulated photograph inspired by the work of Rene Magritte. But it is printed on the canvas on the rear of the stretcher frame. The stretcher frame and canvas appear very old and well used. There are breaks and repairs. Labels from galleries. Scribbled notes in various hands (including, "This is not a Magritte" and what might be a shipping label with Coco Chanel's studio address) carved into the surface. The effect gives the viewer pause: "Is there a valuable painting on the rear of the piece?" And the answer is no. But there is a cheap bit of mall art back there. The art is framed by several layers, containers, or frames. One is painted in blue directly onto the canvas, the stretchers are another, and the third is the ornate frame surrounding the whole thing.
