My experiences working in sculpture studios in Italy have given me the opportunity to interact with and be inspired by other sculptors from around the world who do as I do and make the pilgrimage to work in the birthplace of Western marble sculpture. I rented space at ARTCO in Seravezza, Italy in 2018 and while poking through the marble storage yard I found and bought this piece of calacatta oro marble. There was a fissure down the long axis, so I split the stone in half and created “Dot Dot Dot” from the other half.

I have seen several works where a relief is carved into the raw surface of a marble face, so I transposed one of my vector sketches to stone. I greatly admire the work of Giovanni Balderi and he uses a long, narrow, sweeping groove in some of his compositions, so that is how I closed the bottom of this composition.

The title comes from the golden band that crosses the figure’s hips. The gold colour on the rough surface is the result of oxidation that has crept into the fissure before I split the marble open.
