The Golden Child Sculpture

For me, this piece, is about unrealistically high expectations, repression & guilt. The “golden” penis (libido/life force) is ensnared by barbed wire with another piece around the waist containing an ironic bow as if it’s a gift. The colourful bow in the middle stands for a weak personality who exists for others and is as a “gift” to them. The gold belt is in the form of a chain acting as a further constraint. The whole figure is “screwed up” as we sometimes literally try to wrap our legs around each other when anxious or distressed. While expressions like “good boy or girl” sound innocuous or even positive they imply that the child can, at other times, be “bad” (rather than doing things that are not good). Similarly, phrases such as “play nicely, be good, look after mummy, behave” can all be burdensome and stifling. The mirror at the top provides an opportunity for self reflection.
