Ships in a Crate
This icon is a tribute to Tom Waits. It is made of a variety of materials and found objects, such as wood, paper, glass, rhinestones & gilded pasta. It contains 2 secret compartments. The first is a small diorama hidden inside a cigar box--a display of objects which reference a few specific Tom Waits songs. The second secret compartment is a pull-out drawer. It reveals a framed letter, written by a Hobo named Box Car Shorty. It was written in 1928 at a Hobo convention in Chicago--quite an exciting artifact! Making this was an intense experience. It took 14 months!

I think of myself as an Academy-trained Outsider Artist. I make mixed media constructions, applying the structure and conventions of religious art to contemporary culture. My pieces might be described as Irreligious Icons. In 2004, I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. That really explained a lot! It put my life in perspective and freed me creatively. I love A.G. Rizzoli, Tramp Art, Gustav Klimt, Hobo Art, Prison Art, 19th & 20th Century Home Crafts, Grade School Art Projects, Watts Towers, Antoni Gaudi, Boy Scout & Girl Scout Craft Projects, Sevy Verna (maker of the Toynbee Tiles), The Clockwork Silver Swan of the Bowes Museum, Dioramas and Scale Models of all kinds, The Day of the Dead and old copies of Popular Mechanics Magazine from the 1940's and 1950's.
