In Spain, the dream of most boys is to be a "torero" (bullfighter) when he grows up, meaning 12 years old, which is when they would go to "Escuela Taurina" (bullfighting school), a very expensive and difficult to get in place throughout Spain. Although controversial (to the point of being banned in some regions like Catalunya), bullfighting proves to be not only a cultural mark of Spain, but a very powerful economic force in agriculture and sports. Also an extremely competitive sport, the likeness of becoming a bullfighter is less than becoming a famous football player. This work is inspired by a young bullfighter in my hometown Higuera la Real, Extremadura and it was commissioned by his escort, Mr. Manolo Medina as a gift for Three Kings Day, a holiday celebrated on January 6th in Spain. I am hoping that viewers feel the truth behind being a bullfighter, that it is an art not to be taken lightly of miss understood. It is hard work, skills of excellence and the search for the perfection of facing and conquering fear, but most importantly, the bull is to be not only challenged, but respected. Make no mistake about it, that not everyone is born to be a bullfighter and even those who dream to become one have a very slim chance of making it to the bull ring. Where is then the glory of a bullfighter? Make no mistake about it, his glory is not found in the killing of the bull, but rather in conquering the fear of facing him, and look him straight in the “bull’s eye” to then walk away...victoriously.

Angie Del Riego is a multitalented artist from the Dominican Republic with the ability to combine music, art and poetry, to reflect her cultural roots and her love for humanity. Largely a self-taught talent, Angie has been called a "Renaissance Woman" for her passion about her art as well as her music. She grew up accompanying herself to sing "Boleros" (Latin American love songs.) Through the passion in the bright colors of her paintings, the character of her drawings, and the expressive emotion of her songs and writings, she tells stories of life experiences that have enriched her life as an artist, as well as a person. After living in the United States for thirty years, Angie had the opportunity to fullfill a lifetime dream of visiting Spain, her father's land. She came in August 2010 and after going through the typical hurdles of a new culture, she found what we all wish for: Love. The exact place was: Extremadura (the border with Portugal), where she fell in love with both the amazing landscape and an "Extremeño", so she is now established herself in Extremadura, Spain (Southwest Spain) where in her studio she continues to develop her many talents.
