About The Artwork

Destiny in the hands of women Freya gives fertility, Frigg cares deliveries by providing her maternal protection and sits at Hlidskialf, supervising and deciding the world. Idunn pours out youth to the gods to get round mortality. The valkyries are in charge of giving death and salvation to the combatants. Saga narrates the course of history. If women and goddesses have a right to life and death over humans but also the gods, it is still the course of their lives that is woven by three norns: Urd, Verdandi, Skuld. A conbined life Urðr, is a noun from the past form of the verb old Norse verða, whose meaning is "to become" and literally means : what has happened. The name of Verðandi, as for it, is the derivative in the present form : what is coming into being. Finally, Skuld's name comes from the Old Norse verb skole / skulle, whose meaning is "should/shall happen", in the sense of obligation more than probability. Thence come maidens, much knowing, Three from the hall, which under that tree stands Urd hight the one, the second Verdandi, - on a tablet they graved— Skuld is the third. Laws they established, life allotted to the sons of men; destinies pronounced. Völuspa Symbolism Urd, Verdandi and Skuld embody destiny, intertwined in the course of time. This temporal as well as causal continuity is also symbolized by the threads of destiny, braided, thus drawing the line of life of each one, by the three nornes at a time, and whose origin of the name "norn" could mean "braiding". The Norns live under the protection of the great Yggdrasil, tree-world as well as tree of life, in the center of the cosmos, where using the alphabet of the Runes, they engrave on wood the destiny of each child. Like humans, the gods are mortal and have their own destiny without perceiving it. Each being of any other essence, giants, dwarves, ... could not escape the weaving of the nornes. Between fatality ...   Urd embodies the performed actions and the acts of each one that will lead to a result and potential collateral effects later in the life of the author and potentially third parties. By Urd, our life is drawn, among other things, by the choices we make and that we must take on us. Free will… Verdandi, symbolizes the strength of our choices, actions and non-actions of the past. As the past becomes present, it represents all that we have accomplished and physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually materializes them in our present. By Verdandi, opportunities arise and ephemeral, the present evaporates quickly to the unknown and unpredictability of the future. .... and responsibility Skuld evokes the future, but also debt, guilt and necessity in the sense of need. So would not have the Scandinavians long ago realized that our land is not an inheritance but a credit, the future, an obliging promise? Skuld is certainly the most enigmatic norne and the one to attract the most attention, witnessing the curiosity of the human towards his future. It represents what will flow from our past and present choices. So the future is not completely predetermined, it will come consequences of the best and worst choices made. The choices present may reorient the course induced by past choices. There is no innate fatal blow.
