Inward Gaze (Assange 2 years) (Europa): photo of oil painting of European nude sitting on an African stool with eyes hidden and downcast. Reflection from the glass gives the impression that the naked body is behind glass under observation, maybe shamed. This is a photographic reworking of my painting, which was a comment on the relationship between Europe and Africa – the beautiful, sensitive, self conscious heroine is focused on herself and is not really conscious of what she is sitting on. This reworking is for political prisoner Julian Assange who has been in solitary confinement in UK jail for two years for publishing the truth about USA/UK/Anglo war crimes in Iraq. He has not been charged, but we know USA has called for him to be executed or kept in jail for life. In this reworking, I was thinking of a prisoner in solitary confinement, private space being constantly invaded by unseen accusers, vulnerable and sometimes shamed. The reflection of a man’s torso can be seen in the naked body. There is a worldwide protest at the continued detention of Julian Assange this Sunday 11 April 2021, with a gathering outside Bellmarsh High Security prison on the outskirts of London.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
