A recurrent theme in my recent work revolves around the plight and the presence of the ubiquitous beach traders. Although reputations differ, many are of an up beat disposition and are received positively as they bare their vibrant array of goods. My work aims to touch on the rabbit hole of conundrums posed as their positive exterior conceals their unfortunate circumstances. Children delight in the display of exciting toys and trinkets, half naked holiday makers lazily haggle over a pair of genuine fake Ray-Bans. Meanwhile this person has risked everything in search of a better existence. This work is in oil on marine ply and vintage nautical chart.

Johnny Morant (b.1982) is a contemporary figurative painter. Working primarily in oil, his evolving process explores the deconstructive analysis of traditional themes. Born in Hong Kong, he moved to England and grew up in the South West. After attending art school in Bristol and Bournemouth he moved to London where his new surroundings had a strong impact on his work. In this densely populated urban setting Morant is steadily making a name for himself as an accomplished painter of the built environment and the people within it; "Playing on the border between clarity and suggestion my work prioritises the intuitive application of paint with an aim to capture the viscosity of light and insecurity of form." Morant has had three successful solo exhibitions at the Rountree Tryon Gallery in London and has work included in many collections including Smith & Williamson, Standard Chartered Bank, Prudential plc and Old Mutual plc. He currently lives and works in West London.
