About The Artwork

What is hidden behind who we are? What is found deep in our unconscious? Will it be chaos? Will it be an endless war with our most primitive states, which we banish from our being in order to live within a society, that is the question I ask. Perhaps the wildest side of the human being is ready to resurface, like a time bomb that only waits for a chaotic and hopeless moment to explode, that is always slumbering in the passivity of the current collective construction, but we only have to wait and see if the mask that unites us is broken. This oil painting is based on the image of "the massacre of the innocents" and shows within the amalgamation of masses and bodies an internal struggle to control our true nature, an uncontrolled and primitive force that slumbers within us and that emerges when we move away from reason. The battle against ourselves is only found in an alternate state, where winning is something that is beyond our power.

Concept: Rafael Pascuale´s work is a search to find the different symbols that create the identity of the human being, thus trying to discover archetypal images in the different visual representations found throughout history and giving them a feeling of out of worldly and rarity from the personal perception of his environment. He achieves this by deforming, juxtaposing, condensing or destroying the images that he thinks can generate some kind of reaction in the artist and in whoever sees his work. Likewise, Rafael tries to decipher the meaning of the questions that revolve around our understanding of reality and our role as beings of consciousness. All this through means such as painting, drawing and sculpture, trying to find an ideal llanguage to generate a reinterpretation of those images that have been of great importance to build a new visual imaginary. Bio: Rafael Pascuale is an artist born in Lima, Peru. From a very young age he´s developed an affinity for self-exploration and trial and error as a way of learning, this has led him to be a self-taught artist. His environment was quite Catholic and this let him to look at the images that surround this religion. For Rafael these images full of pain, sadism, anguish and emotionality mark his work a lot, not because of their religiosity, but because of their great historical impact, their ability to shape contemporary society and create archetypal images capable of influencing human beings. through its evolution. In addition to his fixation on that subject, Rafael developed an interest in different philosophical currents on metaphysics, psychology as well as currents of thought such as transcendentalism, Buddhism and the different forms of oriental thought. Over the years he develops a self-taught way of working, concentrating on learning classical artistic techniques of painting, drawing, sculpture and engraving, showing a clear influence of Italian, Spanish, German and Dutch baroque art. This helps him to achieve his own language and, based on what he has learned, he moves away from a realistic approach to images and thus creates countless works that converge in a constant search to understand and decipher the human condition. Rafael bases his work on symbolic elements that represent the concepts of construction of reality in all its dimensional states.
