About The Artwork

“Dictature Numérique” Serving as a commentary on the increasing power and control of technology, the work represents the various entities that collect vast amounts of data on their users. The combination of data collection, influence, and power, is actively shaping public opinion and government policy. The figure seated upon a throne is an allegory for the unseen and often faceless entities that exert control over the digital realm. Those that devise the information we see and how we think about the world around us. The absence of a head symbolises the loss of agency and the erosion of personal identity in the face of the all-consuming power of technology. “Dictature Numérique” (Digital Dictatorship) suggests the idea that we have allowed ourselves to be subsumed by systems that perpetuate chemical euphoria, inferiority complex, obsessive self-scrutiny while subverting individual freedom and personal expression.

Solène Biche is a French artist and architectural designer whose work explores contemporary concerns through levity and decadent visual style. She subverts society's expectation for austerity when dealing with sensitive topics by dignifying tragedy with beauty, presenting global issues in a more digestible form. Her work also juxtaposes cultural systems to foreground the experiences of under-represented social groups, catalyzing a sense of connection and empowerment.
