Dry and Dusty is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. Painting depicts a family escaping a dust storms of the 1930s. Black Sunday, April 14th, 1935, refers to a particularly severe dust storm that rolled across the Central Plains turning afternoon sunshine to complete, utter darkness. Its was one of the worst dust storms in American history and it caused immense economic and agricultural damage.
