Filippa Buttitta’s portrait of Lee Rhiannon MLC entitled ‘Eyeing a Greener Future’ was painted with the knowledge that Lee was aspiring towards a grander political future in the months prior to the Federal election in 2010. Previously the leader of The Greens in the NSW State parliament Lee has been busy campaigning for and ‘eyeing’ a position as a Federal Senator particularly during the time this portrait was being painted. Presenting her close and personal and deliberately focusing on one of her penetrating blue eyes as a focal point, the painting attempts to draw us in towards understanding the compassionate and political aspirations of a woman who has worked hard to be elected as a Federal Senator. The painting also presents Lee as a critical female force during a time Australia’s political history is in the making and transforming into a greener future.
