I witnessed this scene on television one evening. A religious rally of rock music mixed with this large group of people displaying bigotry and stupidity. In order to relay to the viewer what the people were saying and screaming, I decided to have the signs put in place. These were the words that were being expressed by the brainwashed group. The scene infuriated me so much that I marched into the studio to paint it. At that time I didn’t have an easel and had to create it by laying the large canvas on a big table. While I worked, I had to prop myself up above the canvas with one leg dangling off the table whilst my other knee held me up. With my face only inches from the canvas, I painted every day, six to eight hours a day, for over a month until it was finished.

Enter a world through another's eyes. A world not of distinct images, but of shadowy inhabitants... hints of colors, shapes and textures which can change at any time into something else. A world captured by an artist who paints what he sees, but barely sees what he paints. Diagnosed with a rare eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa at the age of nine, Kontra began drawing shortly afterwards as a way to escape depression. He is a self taught artist and relies on his memory and imagination in order to create his work. Using only his left eye, he must fight through the obstacles of severe tunnel vision, blind spots, blurred vision, painful eye strain and nystagmus (involuntary eye movements). When he paints, his field of view on the canvas is less than ¼ of an inch. In essence, it's like looking at the world through a straw. Some call his art "outsider" since he is self-taught, but others call him an expressionist due to the strong feelings and emotions depicted in some of his paintings. His subject matter includes portraiture, figurative, architectural design, landscapes, fantasy, abstracts and political art. Kontra's work has been shown in group art exhibits at various art galleries and rehabilitation institutes across the U.S., and his solo exhibitions have included Cleveland, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Oceanside California and at the University of Georgia. Originally from Cleveland, he also lived in Maine and in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. His current residence and studio is located deep in the woods of the Ozark mountains where his creativity is enhanced by wildlife and nature. "Insolence and ignorance shown by others can be the best fuel for fierce determination." D. Kontra "I open my mind allowing my memory and imagination to cut through the blindness in order to create the visions that I see." D. Kontra
