About The Artwork

According to one version of the origin of the caramel cane, the choirmaster of Cologne Cathedral, pondering how to silence the choirboys during the service, and desperate to achieve silence by punishment, ordered some long candy sticks from a local confectioner. According to his idea, such sweets would keep the children occupied for a long time. At the same time, to avoid accusations of the sinfulness of such treats, the choirmaster "disguised" the candy as an educational material: at his request, the confectioner bent the sticks into the shape of a shepherd's staff to remind the children of the shepherds' worship of the baby Jesus

Ilya Potapov is a contemporary Russian artist. His main source of ideas is society. World events, generational values, communication technologies, family attitudes and traditions. He likes to call it ordinary surrealism or amazing parodies of ordinary activities. The artist's ironic cuts often betray even serious plots. His main media are canvas and oil. According to him, this material is the most expressive because of the semantic load that he gave to the canvases. He often uses acrylic as a process, but usually in support of oil, to create more texture and layers.
