Georgia
Lasha Beraia is a self-taught artist based in Tbilisi, Georgia. He began making art in the early 1990s. His initial interests were photography and design. In 2012 he began composing music. Alongside producing art, he has always sought more theoretical knowledge in the field. He is also a book publisher. One of the main focuses of his publishing house, Logos Press, is art books. He was chief editor of the Georgian translation of the bestselling The Story of Art by E.H. Gobmrich, which was published in 2012. A new stage in his artistic development began in 2013, when his paintings and graphic works earned public interest and the attention of art specialists. He created his first minimalist graphic works with his fingers on his smartphone. Now he creates digital sketches of his artworks through the use of a tablet and digital pencil. Then he paints with oils and acrylics on canvas. His works are imbued with references to ancient culture and art, one of the central motives being the beauty of the human body. His fascination with ancient and renaissance aesthetics and values is not coincidental. He graduated Tbilisi State University with a speciality in Classical (Greco-Roman) Philology. After earning his master's at the same university, he lectured on the history of Ancient Greek culture. His art is influenced by surrealist, symbolist and minimalist movements. The theme of his work takes shape spontaneously, during the drawing or painting process. He expresses himself freely and shows the viewer his attitudes towards themes of importance to him, such as: the wholeness of the world and interconnectedness of its elements; freedom (personal, religious, social); love; sensuality; and sexuality. Among his main artistic influences are Paul Gauguin, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse.
