About The Artwork

Acrylic, gesso, ground earth pigments, graphite, sandpaper on fabriano paper. My sister Sanga has been a great supporter of me following my pathway in Art. She recently turned 50, so I painted this portrait of her from photographs I took earlier in the summer. My process was inspired by Brighton based artist Ian Hodgson, who works almost exclusively in graphite and charcoal. Ian often begins his drawings with a lines drawn with a blunt instrument, or sandpaper. These leave no marks, simply leaving precise or expressive indentations in the paper, Then he used graphite powder to bring the marks to life. Finally drawing the subject with his huge skills based on yeas of figure drawing. I've added to this process colour and paint. I found the guess mixing with residues of sandpaper, and ground earth pigments creating a texture like sandstone for my acrylic panting. Feels like a fresco.Im especially happy to have captured an aspect of her character, as she enters the third phase of her life, letting go of the old - the aspect of her intense concentration on a subject in her mind, as she contemplates a decision that needs to made. She appears to be gazing a distant object, but she is looking inward. The ox-blood colours remind me of our birthplace in Africa, the red mud, the floors of the huts - and the bloodshed of tribal war and colonialism.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
