About The Artwork

The story behind the painting "Strive to Be": This was the 1st painting I did, after deciding to do art more seriously. I was in South Africa when that decision came to me, after reflecting on my future, hopes & dreams... I had always been drawing & painting, but I wanted to lift it up to another level. I began painting this painting right after I returned home to Denmark in may 2005. I designed the wallpaper pattern myself on paper and did the composition digitally. I added a selected picture of Monroe, which I stripped down to only showing the shades on her. Then I painted the composition on canvas with acrylic paint. Halfway through the painting I bumped into the biggest challenge of my life in september 2005. I had two jobs, just started on an university, a longterm relationship break-up, personal crisis and I went down with stress, marking me forever. It took me 4-5 months before I could start working again and I had to drop out of the university. Even though I had problems with holding a pen or a paint brush steady, I decided that I wanted to finish this painting, which was quite challenging due the sharp lines of the wallpaper pattern.. When I finally finished the painting, it served as the only thing in my life that gave me confidence at that time, and which was complete and good. It was a symbol of where I wanted be, about all the things I wanted to change and that I wanted to start my life over. And so I did. Acrylic paint on canvas 80 cm x 60 cm x 2 cm (HxWxD)

I've been painting more seriously since 2005, where I went back to Denmark from South Africa, with a clear vision: I wanted to do more of my creative skills and dreams, and do paintings on a new level than before. I have always been drawing and painting, but this was a turning point in my life. I've have studied architectural engineering, and not art school, since it was not possible for me to do so. In some of my paintings, one can see the link between my expression and my education within architecture and graphic design. Studying architecture also meant that I couldn't paint as much as I wanted, and so limited the size of my portfolio. I'm fascinated by fashion photography, music and design, so I'm often inspired by these influences. I want to make paintings that have a positive effect on people. Something that makes people smile, wonder and which makes a good impression on the wall... More paintings will be uploaded soon...
