About The Artwork

The Poet‘s Anguish, evaluation by Eliza Yacheva. This artwork is inspired by the poem Twelve Songs. The poet is the English born W. H. Auden. More specifically, the painting emerged from the first two verses from the 5th section of the poem "Fish in the unruffled lakes, Their swarming colors wear". The fish can be spotted in the bottom part of the artwork, bathing in the swarming colours the author had described. The lakes are depicted as patches of light aquamarine blue all over the composition. The painting is made of two layers of canvas with areas cut out to reveal strong contrasts of colour. A few traces of scratching technique show the layer underneath. A mindful parallel with the Expressionist painter Paul Klee can be made. His works Fish Magic and The Goldfish create a similar magical realm where the aquatic, the celestial and the earthly intermingle. He also has two surfaces, which are revealed by scratching and scrawling the design. They put emphasis on the surreal, expressionistand highly abstract mood.

Born 1960 It is a fact that truth cannot be found in appearance, the genetically adapted eye with its restrictions reveals only the particular. Truth, for me, is more likely to be gleaned within the subject; in the form of intuition. My paintings are therefore intuitive diagrams which I then compose into paintings. The rock tombs of St Patrick's, in Heysham, Lancashire, provided a template for my simplified outlines, which are used not only within the pictorial structure but also as potent symbols of being and its temporal constraints. For me, painting has to be as 'authentic' and 'real' as the expanding universe we find ourselves in.
