About The Artwork

This contemporary, original 9"x 12" still life oil painting was inspired by the influential nature of color and the season of spring. To honor that inspiration, the canvas captures the beautiful shapes and colors of a clear glass vase with red and pink Azalea flowers. The colorful bouquet rests on table decorated with light hearted patterning, subtle geometric shapes, a handmade bowl and engaging violet cast shadows. The painting has a unique style that is bright, cheerful and interesting to look at. The palette of spring-like colors in yellow, white and soft blue are coupled with the surprising touches of red, pink and orange which add an element of excitement. A beautiful use of line is used to capture the shapes adding to the paintings fresh, unique and contemporary perspective.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
