This photograph is taken on Ball Avenue in Galveston in the oldest part of town, the East End. Built at the turn of the century, the row of houses were first owned by former slaves. The block remained a traditional Galveston "African American" up until the 1980s. These days, the houses are now vacant as most houses in Galveston seem to be. The photograph, although historically rooted, is meant to be more abstract. The blur of the houses, the darkness, the light tracking of the stars all represent the distance between the viewer & the loss of the world. It pulls you into that hopeful place that is only hopeful, if you see it on an upswing. If you are going down, it can take you farther that way. Sorrow I guess. If I had a phrase, I would call it "glorious sorrow." -csb
