Painting disengagement is the capturing of life in a phase that can be compared to that of a leaf that has been shrunk, or a speechless rebel, or a child who has been scolded. It is akin to that phase of life in which both the will and the body are left in a weakened state. Women today participate in contemporary individualism. Very often today’s woman is obsessed with her independent self. There can be many advantages to this mentality. However, a disadvantage can be separation from family, alienation and the onset of depressive disorders. The desire to achieve the ideal and the possibility of failing to attain this ideal (I mean failure while performing multiple contemporary roles) is a constitutive part of contemporary woman’s subjectivity. The approach to the depression presented in these works is evolutionary in character. The paintings show gradual transitions between the states of deep sadness through self-consciousness to healing. The capacities to remember and project, to dream, to desire and to fantasize are returned.
