About The Artwork

Phyllis and Vi have somewhat different retirement ideals, basically, they're going to be playing poker on a crowded cruise ship, entirely alone with a good book in a cottage in the forest. This is one of a pair of portraits I painted in 2012 at the very early end of my anthropomorphic portraits. They are all animals with their own stories in the same vein as Beatrix Potter or EH Shepard. Violet, a soft brown rabbit in a deep purple silk shirt with a pussy-bow, is part of a pair of rabbits, painted to face one another. She will ship in an envelope, sandwiched between two boards.

Agnes Meintjes, also known as Lara, is a South African artist, illustrator and student happily living in Long Beach, California. She is particularly interested in anthropomorphism and the colonizing properties of ink. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
