About The Artwork

Flood moon oil on canvas. Our city, Szeged, was completely rebuilt after the Great Flood of 1879. Surrounding the city are barriers, meant to hinder future such disasters. Since my childhood, I had seen several spring floods that were so severe, the threat of another flood loomed high. The built up area around the city, the dam and the high water induced the experience, and thus, the painting. It is not possible to understand at first glance what is seen. It calls the viewer to ponder more deeply, and decipher the visual. Why is the moon a crescent moon? Why is the dam so small? Why are the people the same shade of orange? I feel the many questions can be answered easily enough. The topic arose during the rising of the Tisza waters. However, it was not my intention to paint the image of a flood. It was at the end of the 80's that this picture was created.... at a time when I was combining various planes and natural forms. The colour scheme is reduced, giving rise to complementary and modulated primary colours. The canvas and oil paints allowed for many technical options, which I enjoy employing if given enough time to build many refined layers into my paintings.
