My hydrangeas are just starting to bloom, are yours? After a long winter followed by a wet spring, I love to see the first of hydrangea blooms peaking out of their leaves promising to add color and texture to my garden. Hydrangeas are an old-fashioned garden favorite. Their name comes from the Greek word for water, hydra, meaning “water vessel,” referring to the cup-like form of the seed-capsule. Symbolically, hydrangeas encompass a broad spectrum of meanings ranging from abundance, heartfelt emotion, gratitude, and boastfulness. Pierre Auguste Renoir is one of my favorite artists. His hydrangea paintings are among my favorites of his large portfolio of garden paintings. When I worked on these abstract paintings, I felt the joy and excitement of seeing color and pattern emerge in the myopic way Renoir did as he studied the shifting moving sunlight as it danced of the hydrangeas in his garden.
