About The Artwork

This painting, part of a series of works titled, "In the Floating World" which refer to the extravagant and stylish luxury of the Edo period (1615-1868), and I wanted to capture the array of rich sensory experiences through my own designs and flights of fancy. I was inspired by the geishas wearing kimonos and their beautiful fans along with buddhas, shrines, birds, and fish. I also was asked to be the Artist Demonstrator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA for the Matisse Exhibit because of my works affinity for Matisse. So, I partly painted this painting in the clear glass room on the main floor of the MFA where I was artist-in-residence recently.

Blessed by a love of life, an optimistic outlook, a very high energy level, a passion for painting, and a drive to put and keep my creative life in the forefront--I believe all this has gone into my forty plus year career as an artist. Since early childhood, I have had a love for strong color and design, regardless of whatever medium I used, be it drawing, collage, mixed-media, oils, acrylics, oilsticks, or encaustics. Regardless of medium, my work is image-based and revolves around the house (both interiors and exteriors) and landscapes as subjects. These subjects are the armature on which I can apply my subjective response to place and time, engaging emotions, fantasy, and fiction. I love to capture my real environments or those of friends and places I've been to, through my screen of selective seeing, playful detail, heightened color, intricate design and pattern, and bits of fantasy. For me, art really is about enhancing and interpreting reality to create a more optimistic and joyous world.
